Course Description

Science, Software Development in Distributed Networked Systems, Network Protocols, LAN/WAN/MAN/VPN and Network Architecture.

The design of this course makes it suitable for any beginner who has no prior knowledge of computing. Starting from scratch, this course gradually prepares students to become proficient computer networking professionals.

The subjects taught in the course have evolved from industry requirements and brought together to form part of a new and exciting Diploma. Currently the industry is dealing with a series of complex issues arising due to a high volume of growth in networked systems.

Students who study towards this Diploma shall find immense opportunities to gain employment, as they will undertake extremely challenging positions solving complex networking issues arising in all sectors of IT.

The material for the Cisco Certified Network Associate and other industrial qualifications are integrated into this Diploma course. Hence, students on the course will be able to obtain both an academic and a professional qualification.

The course is practically based and includes substantial amounts of project and group work. Students use the languages and tools that are widely used in the industry.

Syllabus
Structure of this course is such that there will be internal assessments and examination preparations for those who wish to optionally submit for industry certification examinations.

The components of this course are structured around a 90-credit points system leading to an Advanced Diploma in Computer Networking. The overall course comprises three levels:

Level - 1
• PC Hardware
• PC Operating Systems
• European Computer Driving License (ECDL)
• Introduction to Network Systems

Level - 2
• Programming Concepts (C/C++, Java)
• Network Operating Systems - A
• Structured Cabling
• CISCO CCNA - A

Level - 3
• Computer Electronics & Server Hardware
• UNIX Operating System & Internet Technology
• Network Operating Systems - B
• CISCO CCNA - B

• Students who successfully complete all the modules of Level -1 may be awarded a Certificate in Computer Networking
• Students who successfully complete all the modules from Level - 1 and Level - 2 may be awarded a Diploma in Computer Networking.
• Students who successfully complete all the modules from Level - 1, Level - 2
and Level - 3 may be awarded an Advanced Diploma in Computer Networking.

Note: Structure of this course is such that there will be internal assessments and examination preparations for those who wish to optionally submit for industry certification examinations.

Entrance Requirements

• GCSE or Overseas equivalent qualifications
• BTEC National Diploma/Certificate
• GCSE Mathematics, English, Science
• For mature students over 21 years, relevant work experience

Assessment

60% Laboratory work

40% Examinations

Student will be required to qualify for all the modules as prescribed by CompTia, Novell, Cisco, SUN and Microsoft. The external examination will take place at a Sylvia Prometric Centre. There will be internal assessments and examination preparations for those who wish to optionally submit for industry certification examinations, for which each candidate must pay the appropriate exam fee.

Career Opportunities

Students who pass the diploma in Network Engineering will have excellent scope for building a career as a Network Application Developer, Network Analyst, Network Security Administrator, System Administrator or Network Manager.
